If your Etsy shop has been open for more than two months and the sales count is at 0 or stuck at 2-3, something specific is wrong. It is rarely "Etsy is dead" or "the algorithm is against me". It is almost always one of the 10 fixable problems below, ranked from most common to least common. Diagnose which one is yours and the fix is usually obvious.

1. Bad main photo

The single most common cause of 0 sales. Buyers scroll search results visually. If your main image is darker, busier, or lower-quality than the listings next to it, you get no clicks.

Test - open the search results for your main keyword. Where does your listing fall visually compared to the top 10? If you have to look twice to find your own listing, the photo is the problem.

Fix - new main image, white or single-color background, product centered, bright but not harsh. Detail in how to take product photos at home that sell.

2. Tags that nobody searches

If your 13 tags are creative but not search-validated, your listing never appears in search results. No views means no sales.

Test - search each of your tags in Etsy's autocomplete. If the autocomplete does not show your phrase, real buyers do not type it.

Fix - rebuild the tag set using eRank or Marmalead for real volume data. Detail in Etsy tags that help you rank in 2026.

3. Price out of category range

Pricing 50% above the category average without the brand presence to justify it kills conversion. Pricing 50% below the average signals "cheap" and many buyers skip you.

Test - check the top 20 sellers in your category. Note their price range. Is your price inside that range?

Fix - adjust toward the middle of the range. Detail in how to price products on Etsy.

4. Description that buyers skip

If your description starts with "Welcome to my shop! Discover this beautiful handmade item..." most buyers stop reading by the second sentence.

Test - read your first paragraph out loud. Does it tell the buyer something specific and useful, or does it sound like a press release?

Fix - rewrite the first 2-3 sentences to lead with concrete product detail. Detail in how to write Etsy descriptions that rank.

5. Shop looks empty

A shop with 3 listings looks like a hobby. Buyers hesitate to buy because the shop might disappear next month. They scroll to the established shop next door.

Fix - get to 10-15 listings minimum within the first month. Quality matters but volume signals legitimacy. Detail in how to start an Etsy shop.

6. No reviews

Reviews are social proof. A shop with 0 reviews converts at roughly half the rate of a shop with 10 reviews, all else equal.

Fix - get the first reviews legitimately. Tell 5-10 specific friends or family who would buy your product anyway. Ask them to leave honest reviews. Once you have 3-5 reviews the conversion improves noticeably.

7. Title structured for SEO at the expense of readability

Titles stuffed with every variation of the keyword ("Ceramic Mug Handmade Pottery Mug Coffee Mug Stoneware Mug Drinkware") read as spam. Buyers and Etsy's algorithm both penalize this in 2026.

Fix - write a title that reads naturally and includes the main keyword and one or two variants. 100-140 characters is the sweet spot.

8. No off-Etsy traffic

If you are relying entirely on Etsy search to find buyers, you are competing against everyone else relying on the same source. Bringing your own traffic gives Etsy the early conversion signal that lifts your listing in their algorithm.

Fix - Pinterest and Instagram. Pinterest in particular drives Etsy traffic for low effort. Pin every listing as a vertical 2:3 image.

9. Returns or messaging issues

Etsy ranks shops partly by responsiveness and quality of customer service. If you ignore messages or handle returns badly, the shop quietly de-ranks.

Fix - respond to every message within 24 hours, ideally within 4. Handle returns gracefully even when annoying. The algorithm sees it.

10. Product itself is wrong for Etsy

The hardest one to face. Some products do not sell on Etsy regardless of execution. Mass-produced commodities, items that conflict with Etsy's handmade-or-vintage rules, and products in oversaturated categories with no differentiation.

If you have fixed photos, tags, price, description, and still get no sales, the product is the problem, not your effort.

Fix - pivot. Pick a different product within Etsy's good fit, or move to a different platform. The lesson from the failed experiment transfers.

The diagnostic order

Fix problems in the order above. Photos first because they decide whether anyone clicks. Tags second because they decide whether you appear in search at all. Then everything else.

Most shops fix the first 3-4 problems and start seeing sales within 30 days of the changes. The fix takes a weekend. The patience to actually run it is what most beginners lack.
